Triglav National Park is the only national park in Slovenia. It is named after Triglav, which rises the highest (2864 m) in the heart of the park and is also Slovenia's highest peak.
The Triglav National Park is located in north-western Slovenia, on the border with Italy and close to the border with Austria, in the south-eastern part of the Alpine massif. It overlaps almost completely with the Eastern Julian Alps. It covers 840 square kilometres, which is four percent of Slovenia's surface area. It is one of Europe's oldest parks, with the first protection dating back to 1924, when the Alpine Conservation Park was established.
