Nature reserves constitute one of the most important conservation categories in Germany and Austria. The exact definitions vary, but together they combine the conservation of natural landscape, the protection of endangered species and the preservation for scientific interests.
The “Schlappolt” nature reserve is the only flysch area of outstanding botanical, plant-geographical and vegetation significance in the Bavarian Alps that almost reaches the alpine altitude level. In addition, the dwarf shrub heaths, alpine grasslands and numerous rare species of flowering plants, mosses and lichens are considered worthy of protection and must be kept away from pollution and encroachment. In addition, the site conditions necessary for the survival of this rare alpine flora, in particular the geomorphological and hydrological situation including the natural surface structures of the various rocks (limestones, clay slates and mica-rich sandstones) with the resulting diverse soils and growth sites, must be preserved and a stable vegetation cover - as protection against erosion - must be ensured. In addition, the Schlappoltkar lakes are to be protected as geological features and alpine stillwater biotopes.
