Rühlower Os

Nature Reserve

Description & Map

Summary

Rühlower Os nature reserve protects an ice-age esker and esker eye, vital habitats for numerous amphibian species. It also preserves valuable calcareous grasslands.

Description

The Rühlower Os nature reserve offers a fascinating glimpse into the geological history of the region. It safeguards a distinctive ice-age esker (Oszug), a ridge of sand and gravel deposited by glacial meltwater, alongside an impressive esker eye (Osauge). These remarkable formations create unique ecological niches. The area is particularly significant as a crucial habitat and breeding ground for many amphibian species. Furthermore, the protected open calcareous grasslands (Magerrasen) are invaluable, supporting specialized plant and insect communities. These grasslands are maintained through careful conservation measures like grazing. Rühlower Os represents a valuable natural landscape in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, preserving both its geological heritage and biodiversity.
