The reserve extends within the Monte Bondone State Forest, immediately west of the city of Trento, in a mountainous area. The site has significant tourist, recreational, and sporting value, alongside productive and conservation functions. The Reserve is also a Natura 2000 area and is one of the protected areas that form the Rete di Riserve Bondone.
The state-owned property, established in the early 1900s through expropriation for military purposes, now covers an area of 782 hectares, predominantly consisting of pasture and meadow-pasture environments, with about 30 hectares of woodland. The flora is particularly rich and includes several rare species with localized distribution: valuable endemic plants such as Bonarota comune (Paederota bonarota), Geranio argentino (Geranium argenteum), and Raponzolo di roccia (Physoplexis comosa) can be found alongside other notable species such as Paeonia officinalis, Anemone alpina, Anemone montana, and many others. The fauna is equally diverse and includes animals typical of mid- and high-mountain environments, as well as some species of small invertebrates of significant scientific interest. The Viote Plain is also home to an interesting peat bog that preserves rare botanical varieties as well as floral endemisms and pre-glacial invertebrate fauna.
