Riserva Naturale Guidata della Scanuppia

Nature Reserve

Description & Map

Summary

It covers 529 hectares of public land on the Vigolana plateau, just south of Trento. The reserve occupies a mountainous area, predominantly forested, with open spaces that were once used for grazing. It is a particularly distinctive protected area, established for the conservation of wildlife through habitat restoration measures. The Reserve is also designated as a Nature 2000 area.

Description

The forest has long been of considerable wildlife interest, especially due to the significant presence of the western capercaillie and black grouse, as well as chamois, roe deer, eagles, hazel grouse, and martens. Hunting is currently prohibited throughout the entire Reserve. Within the forest are Malga Imprech, with its alpine pasture still in seasonal use, and the splendid Renaissance building of Malga Palazzo, which has recently been restored. Access to the alpine pasture from Besenello is via a very steep paved road, 7.5 kilometres long with an elevation gain of 1,317 metres. The road is closed to motor traffic as well as to cyclists and mountain bikers.
