NSG Wolfweid protects endangered animal and plant species and rare biotopes like rush-rich wet meadows and sedge swamps. It preserves a valuable meadow valley with extensively used wet and nutrient-poor grasslands, plus natural spring areas.
The Wolfweid Nature Reserve provides a vital habitat for numerous animal and plant species endangered in North Rhine-Westphalia. It safeguards a diverse biotope complex of significant regional importance. Within its boundaries, you can find rare biotope types such as sedge and rush-rich wet meadows, characteristic small and large sedge swamps, and vibrant fallow tall herb communities. Species-rich mountain hay meadows further enhance its biodiversity. Another key objective is the preservation of near-natural, relatively nutrient-poor standing waters, which serve as crucial habitats. The area encompasses a valuable meadow valley and adjacent valley slopes, predominantly characterized by extensively used wet and nutrient-poor grasslands, complemented by remnants of stream-side riparian woodland. Special focus is also placed on restoring and preserving spring areas with their typical, well-developed spring vegetation, essential for the entire ecosystem.
