Alle heimischen Spechtarten sind in diesen alten Buchenwäldern zuhause.
Description
Ten of the 14 bat species found in Hamburg have been identified in the extension area of the nature reserve alone, more than in any other forest area in the city. The old, decaying trees provide a habitat for wood-dwelling beetles. Many of the species found there are highly endangered or threatened with extinction elsewhere. Four of these beetle species are ‘primeval forest relic species’ that only occur in very old forests. One speciesof beetle was even rediscovered after being considered lost to Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein for over 100 years. Rare forest bird species such as the wood warbler, Eurasian blackcap, short-toed treecreeper, mistle thrush, robin, middle spotted woodpecker, black woodpecker and stock dove are common in the Wohldorfer Wald. To provide good living conditions for rare animal, fungus and plant species inhabiting dead wood, groups of old trees and trees rich in nests, cavities and dead wood (‘biotope trees’) are given special protection and support in the nature reserve.
