NSG Rinnenberg protects a vital grassland-forest complex in the Rumbecker Höhen. It safeguards warm oak forests, lean grasslands, and historic coppices, providing a home for rare species like the Wild Service Tree and preserving cultural heritage.
The Rinnenberg Nature Reserve in the Rumbecker Höhen protects a nationally significant grassland-forest complex. It is dedicated to preserving and developing diverse habitats for rare and endangered animal and plant species. This area features thermophilic oak and hornbeam-oak forests, some historically managed as coppices, alongside extensively used slope grasslands and species-rich lean pastures. Various woody structures, including hedges and small orchards, further enhance this unique biotope complex. Rinnenberg serves as an important refuge and stepping stone biotope for dry-warm forest and edge communities, forming part of a larger ecological network. The endangered Wild Service Tree (Sorbus terminalis) is particularly protected here. Beyond its ecological value, the area holds significant cultural-historical importance due to its traditional coppice use, and is recognized for the rarity, special character, and outstanding beauty of its well-developed forest, hedge, and grassland complex.
