Description

The Nonnenbachtal and Side Valleys nature reserve is a significant landscape of flowing waters and diverse ecosystems near Blankenheim. It protects meandering medium-mountain streams and their rich aquatic life, including brook lamprey and European sculpin. The area features extensive calcareous dry grasslands with notable orchids and juniper formations, species-rich hay meadows, and rare fens. Its varied forests include ancient beech, oak-hornbeam, riparian, and unique ravine and slope mixed woodlands. This habitat mosaic provides essential refuge for numerous threatened species. Among them are several bat species like the Pond Bat and Bechstein's Bat, and birds such as the Red Kite, Great Grey Shrike, and various woodpeckers. The reserve's natural beauty, ecological complexity, and role as a vital biotope network between river systems are of high importance.
