Description

The Kalktriften westlich Dahlem nature reserve is a particularly valuable, structurally rich grassland area with high landscape aesthetic appeal. It preserves a diverse biotope complex that is also of cultural-historical significance. Key to its protection are the characteristic, orchid-rich calcareous grasslands. These dry grasslands are a priority FFH habitat (Code 6210) and are distinguished by their characteristic vegetation and fauna. They provide an indispensable home for numerous animal and plant species endangered according to the Red List in North Rhine-Westphalia. The area also includes species-rich lowland hay meadows (FFH Code 6510) and calcareous cliffs with specialized chasmophytic vegetation (FFH Code 8210). As part of the European ecological network Natura 2000, the nature reserve makes an important contribution to the conservation of these habitats and species of community interest. It is also of scientific and natural historical importance.
