The Weyer Calcareous Grassland Complex protects valuable semi-dry grasslands with rare flora and fauna. It features unique calcareous tuff caves, serving as winter quarters for bats, and natural forests. Historical traces, including a Roman water pipeline, are also present.
The Kalkmagerrasenkomplex bei Weyer nature reserve preserves a special diversity of habitats and species. It is home to extensive calcareous semi-dry grasslands, which support a characteristic array of flora and fauna. These are complemented by lean meadows, pastures, and dry-warm shrub fringes. Unique calcareous tuff caves with numerous rock crevices and specific microclimatic conditions are also found here. They provide crucial winter quarters for bats, amphibians, and various insect species, and serve as habitats for specialized cave-dwelling animals. The near-natural gorge and slope mixed forests, along with their fore-forests and species-rich forest edges, further enhance the biological diversity. Additionally, the area tells a story of its past, featuring a Roman water pipeline and evidence of former mining activities that highlight its cultural significance.
