Hilgersberg Nature Reserve protects calcareous grasslands, lean meadows, and dry grasslands with shrub structures. It's a vital habitat for rare plants like Fringed Gentian, Clustered Bellflower, and the Red-backed Shrike. A key ecological corridor.
The Hilgersberg Nature Reserve is established to preserve a well-developed and structurally rich biotope complex. It serves as a crucial habitat for many animal and plant species that are rare and endangered in North Rhine-Westphalia. The area features extensive calcareous grasslands, lean meadows, pastures, and dry and semi-dry grasslands, complemented by valuable shrub structures. Specifically protected are populations of rare plants such as a rare woodruff species (Hügel-Meier), the Clustered Bellflower, the Fringed Gentian, the Rough Violet, and the Large-flowered Selfheal. The Red-backed Shrike, an endangered bird species, also finds an important refuge here. Furthermore, the area plays a significant role as a regional component in the biotope network, substantially contributing to the connectivity of valuable natural spaces.
