Description

The Egge Nature Reserve in Brilon safeguards a rich mosaic of valuable habitats. It encompasses extensive dry grasslands, species-rich semi-natural meadows and pastures, alongside forests and shrublands adapted to dry-warm conditions. These diverse biotopes, further enriched by natural stream sections, springs, and secondary habitats formed from historical quarrying, provide a crucial refuge for a variety of rare and endangered animal and plant species. The conservation efforts focus on optimizing their living conditions. Another significant purpose is maintaining the distinctive landscape feature: the impressive steep escarpment descending from the Briloner Hochfläche into the Hoppecketal, which offers particularly scenic views from the northern peak of the Egge. This area is also an integral part of the European Natura 2000 network, ensuring the protection of vital FFH habitats and numerous bird species.
