Description

The Bienener Altrhein, Millinger Meer, and Hurler Meer nature reserve is a vital part of the Lower Rhine's natural heritage, preserving one of its last old Rhine river systems. Its waters are dynamically connected to the Rhine, creating characteristic floodplain conditions with fluctuating water levels. This area protects diverse habitats, including nutrient-rich eutrophic lakes, extensive floating leaf and reed zones, and soft-wood riparian forests. Species-rich hay meadows and traditional pollarded willows contribute to its unique cultural landscape. The reserve is a crucial sanctuary for numerous bird species. It hosts northwest Germany's only black tern colony, successfully re-established through dedicated conservation efforts. Many other birds, such as great bitterns, marsh harriers, common terns, and various geese and swans, use these waters for breeding, resting, molting, and wintering. Rare fish like the spined loach and amphibians such as the great crested newt also thrive in these protected oxbow lakes.
