Description

The Berker Wiesen nature reserve in North Rhine-Westphalia is a valuable sanctuary known for its exceptional beauty and diverse landscapes. It preserves a rich biotope complex featuring rare and endangered habitats, including sedge and rush-rich wet meadows, species-rich mountain hay meadows, Nardus grasslands, and wet heaths. This area provides a crucial habitat for numerous animal and plant species listed on the Red List in NRW. It also protects culturally and ecologically significant, structurally rich grasslands, valuable meadow valleys, and adjacent slopes with extensively used wet and lean grasslands, alongside remnants of riparian woodlands. The spring areas with their characteristic vegetation are of particular importance. As part of the European Natura 2000 network, Berker Wiesen contributes to the preservation of priority FFH habitat types, such as species-rich Nardus grasslands in low mountain ranges, featuring Arnica and Pseudorchis albida, as well as wet heaths and mountain hay meadows.
