Neuastenberg's mountain meadows protect diverse montane grasslands, vital for rare plants like those in Borstgrasrasen and Glatthaferwiesen, and species like the Meadow Pipit and Common Snipe. It preserves a unique cultural landscape.
The Bergwiesen bei Neuastenberg nature reserve is a vital part of the European Natura 2000 network, safeguarding a mosaic of rich, montane grasslands and other diverse ecosystems. This area protects important habitats such as species-rich mountain hay meadows (Bergmähwiesen), nutrient-poor Borstgrasrasen, and Glatthafer- and Wiesenknopf-Silgenwiesen, which are home to numerous rare and endangered plant species. Beyond grasslands, the reserve also encompasses pristine flowing waters with unique underwater vegetation, dry heathlands, and natural Luzulo-Fagetum beech forests. These varied landscapes provide crucial habitats for characteristic fauna, including ground-nesting birds like the Meadow Pipit and the Common Snipe, which relies on the spring-fed wet pastures. The protection also ensures the preservation of the traditional grassland use, which has shaped the distinctive cultural landscape of the Winterberg plateau for centuries, contributing to its unique character.
