The Klingenberger Old Excavation Nature Reserve preserves a unique, small-scale mosaic of diverse habitats. This variety includes open water bodies, serving as crucial refugia for amphibians, molluscs, and small fish, alongside dry, sparsely vegetated areas being developed specifically for reptiles. These protected areas are essential for rare and endangered animal and plant species. The reserve's significance for birds is particularly notable: it hosts the largest sand martin colony in the greater Düsseldorf-Cologne area and is a vital moulting, resting, and summering site for various duck and plover species. It serves as a retreat for numerous other bird species, significantly contributing to species conservation.
