Riserva naturale provinciale Monte Brione

Summary

Monte Brione rises in isolation in the middle of the Sarca alluvial plain, right next to Lake Garda, separating the two towns of Riva del Garda and Torbole. Its main naturalistic interest lies in its flora, which includes an exceptionally high number of species—possibly as many as 500, according to some botanists—within a relatively small area. The reserve is also designated as a Flora-Fauna-Habitat area (Natura 2000 network) and is one of the protected areas that make up the Sarca River Park.

Description

Monte Brione, a limestone-marl hill rising to 376 metres, stands out for its distinctive shape and the rocky cliffs that characterise its eastern side. Its location, north of Lake Garda, creates a unique sub-Mediterranean climate within the Alpine region, providing ideal conditions for extraordinary biodiversity. The area is home to terraced olive groves, thermophilous woodlands and numerous Mediterranean plant species, some of which are rare or occur here at the northern limit of their natural range. Of particular interest is the presence of more than 20 species of wild orchids, some of them very rare and protected. The fauna is also rich and diverse, with particular importance given to bird species associated with warm and dry environments.
