Monte Baldo di Brentonico

Summary

The site encompasses the northernmost section of the Monte Baldo limestone range: Monte Altissimo. The current vegetation landscape represents a harmonious balance between natural habitats and human forestry and pastoral activities. The presence of endemic plant species is exceptional; these have been studied by renowned botanists and herbalists since the sixteenth century. The area lies within the territory of the Monte Baldo Local Nature Park.

Description

The lower slopes of Monte Altissimo are covered by extensive beech forests interspersed with large expanses of pastureland. Higher up, there are alpine grasslands, vast areas of subalpine shrubland, including alder and mountain pine, as well as rocky habitats. The site is of significant national and/or provincial importance due to the presence and reproduction of endangered animal species, important glacial relicts, species that are exclusive to and/or characteristic of the Alps, as well as invertebrates associated with forests in a high degree of natural condition. A considerable number of endemic species and the remarkable environmental diversity, combined with easy accessibility, make the Cornapiana area particularly suitable for educational activities. The area is of international importance for the passage of numerous medium- and long-distance migratory species during late summer and autumn (post-breeding migration).
