Laacher See is a vital nature reserve, including its volcanic crater rim, specifically protecting diverse birdlife. It serves as a crucial breeding, resting, and wintering ground for waterbirds like Great Crested Grebes, Coots, and various duck species.
The Laacher See nature reserve, established in 1940, encompasses the lake and its surrounding volcanic crater rim. The primary purpose of its protection is to preserve the rich and diverse birdlife. As an important breeding ground, the lake is home to various waterbirds such as Great Crested Grebes, Coots, Moorhens, Reed Warblers, and Reed Buntings. Furthermore, Laacher See is a crucial resting and wintering area for numerous water-dependent bird species, as it rarely freezes completely even during severe winters. Here, observant visitors can regularly spot Tufted Ducks, Pochards, and Common Teals. To safeguard these sensitive ecosystems, special regulations are in place: the core protection period runs from October to March. Outside these months, access to the lake is permitted under certain conditions.
