Description
The Graureiher-Kolonie is the largest nature reserve in the Altenkirchen district (Westerwald), Rheinland-Pfalz, established in 2001. This vital area, stretching along the Sieg river, is dedicated to safeguarding a prominent colony of Grey Herons. Protection efforts focus on maintaining their crucial breeding grounds and the diverse wetland habitats that support them, including riparian forests and floodplains. This preserves the long-term survival of the heron population and the ecological integrity of the entire riverine landscape.
