Description
The Fauler See - Rustwerder/Poel nature reserve on the southwest of Poel Island is a valuable landscape, recognized under EU law as an FFH and bird sanctuary. This scientifically and culturally significant area protects a distinctive brackish lagoon, extensive salt marshes, and dynamic beach ridge and hook systems. It serves as a crucial breeding and resting habitat for numerous water and wading birds. The unique environment supports a diverse range of characteristic salt marsh flora, including resilient species like sea pinks and sea lavender. The reserve plays a vital role in preserving rare and endangered plant and animal communities within the Wismar Bay region.
