The Regional Natural Park of the Julian Pre-Alps, established in 1996, covers approximately 97 km² in the province of Udine, involving the municipalities of Chiusaforte, Lusevera, Moggio Udinese, Resia, Resiutta and Venzone. The park territory includes part of the Alps and the Julian Pre-Alps, with altitudes ranging from 1,858 metres at Mount Plauris to 2,587 metres at Mount Canin.
The particular geographical position of the park favours the meeting of three biogeographical areas: Mediterranean, Illyrian and Alpine, contributing to an extraordinary biodiversity with numerous endemic and rare species of fauna and flora. The fauna includes all the Alpine ungulates, such as roe deer, red deer, chamois, ibex and wild boar, as well as predators such as the brown bear, golden jackal, wolf and lynx. The avifauna includes species such as the golden eagle, griffon vulture, eagle owl and the rock partridge, the park's symbol. In June 2019, the area was recognised by UNESCO as the Italian Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve, underlining the importance of the park in promoting sustainable development and preserving biodiversity.
