The Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park is located in the heart of the “Pale Mountains”, as the Dolomites are also called. The conservation side can be reached via the both branches of the Braies Valley, San Cassiano in Badia or the Rau valley behind San Vigilio.
The nature park is sealed off in the north by the Braies Valley, in the east by the Val di Landro, in the south by the Val Travenanzes and in the west by the Val di Badia.
The mountain landscape of the Dolomites impresses with bare karst plateaus, mountain lakes, pale, chaotically towered peaks, wide scree heaps and in between the colorful floral splendor of the alpine meadows. Well known are the alpine highlands of Fanes and Sennes as well as Prato Piazza, and mountain lakes such as the Lago di Braies and the Dobbiaco lake.
The nature park was founded in 1980, and covers an area of 25,485 ha, which is spread across the municipalities of Dobbiaco, Braies, Valdaora, Marebbe, La Valle and Badia.
The Nature Park is part of the European-wide Natura 2000 sites and is also part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visitors of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park can immerse themselves in the world of the "Pale Mountains", as the Dolomites are also called. The area is surrounded by legends of long-lost empires and petrified paradises.
The mountain landscape of the Dolomites impresses with bare karst plateaus, mountain lakes, pale, chaotically towered peaks, wide scree heaps and in between the colorful floral splendor of the alpine meadows. Rugged peaks surround the extensive alpine pastures of Fanes, Sennes, Fosses and Prato Piazza. Lake Braies, trapped in a rocky basin, is considered the most impressive lake in the Dolomites. Like Lake Dobbiaco, it was dammed up by massive landslides.
The Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park was founded in 1980 and covers an area of 25,485 ha, which is distributed on sub-areas of the municipalities of Dobbiaco, Braies, Valdaora, Marebbe, La Valle and Badia. In the south, the protected area extends to the province border, in the east it is bounded by the Val di Landro. The mountain slopes facing the Val Pusteria form the northern border and in the west the slopes of the park border the Val Badia. The conservation side can be reached via the both branches of the Braies Valley, San Cassiano in Badia or the Rau valley behind San Vigilio in Marebbe.
The park is part of the European-wide Natura 2000 sites, which aim to promote habitat, flora and fauna conservation and were established under the EU’s FFH Directive (92/43/EC) and Bird’s Directive (2009/147/EC).
The nature park is also part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site.
