Duvenwischen is located in the north-east of Hamburg and comprises valuable forest areas, wetlands and wet grasslands. Covering 43.6 hectares, the area is characterised by a high number of species and 25 biotope types, which means that there is great structural diversity within a very small area. Almost half of the area (19.1 hectares) has a biotope value rating of eight (on a scale of one to nine) and is therefore considered particularly valuable. The Duvenwischen nature reserve is directly adjacent to the Schleswig-Holstein nature reserve ‘Heidkoppelmoor und Umgebung’.
Duvenwischen, with its marshes and deciduous forests, is home and habitat to specialised and endangered animals and plants. The marshes, rushes and sedges, alder and birch swamps and peatland forests there are particularly valuable. Endangered species such as bladder sedge and millet sedge thrive here. Marsh marigolds, small valerian and devil's-bit scabious can also be found here. A total of 34 plant species from Hamburg's Red List have been mapped here.
