The Wallberge und Kreidescholle bei Alt Gatschow nature reserve, south of Demmin in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, preserves a unique landscape shaped by the last ice age. Its primary purpose is to protect an impressive esker ridge, known locally as the 'Wallberge', alongside two distinctive chalk erratics, the 'Kreideschollen', situated in the northern part of the area. These geological formations support valuable calcareous grasslands, which have been historically grazed since the Middle Ages. This traditional land use continues today with year-round grazing by Gotland sheep, an essential practice for maintaining the diverse flora and fauna of these dry grasslands.
