This area serves as a vital habitat for numerous rare animal and plant species. It features ancient beech and oak stands providing crucial nesting and breeding sites for various birds, alongside characteristic pine and spruce forests. The reserve is partially bordered by the Randow river to the east, whose relatively natural course and steep banks are home to one of the last remaining kingfisher breeding pairs in the region. Other protected bird species include the wryneck, hoopoe, and lesser spotted eagle. The rich flora includes protected plants like Solomon's seal, red campion, wood anemone, and liverwort. The natural heritage is further complemented by an old scattered fruit orchard, remnants of the former Waldhof estate, adding a cultural layer to this ecologically valuable landscape.
