The Schuttholzer Moor was designated a nature reserve in 1983 in order to protect this moor, which is rare in the Bavarian Forest – a calcareous lowland moor complex. To this end, it is essential to preserve the soil conditions and water balance and to protect rare animal and plant species. These include, for example, the highly endangered Gentiana pneumonanthe and carnivorous plants such as the common butterwort.
