These varied conditions – supported by the remaining calcareous sand and the impermeable marl underground – create a mosaic of valuable biotopes. This rich variety of habitats fosters unique flora and fauna, specifically adapted to these distinct soil conditions. This area holds supra-regional importance and is an essential component of the "Kalkflugsandgebiet zwischen Mainz und Ingelheim" FFH area, as well as the European Natura 2000 network. The protection aims to preserve these special habitats with their adapted species and ensure their ecological function within the larger network. It stands as an example of how former extraction sites can transform into valuable natural havens.
