The “Sager Meere, Kleiner Sand and Heumoor” nature reserve covers around 200 hectares and is home to a wide variety of rare habitats and species. Particularly in need of protection are the heaths and sandy grasslands in the Kleiner Sand, the Sager Meere as nutrient-poor geest lakes and the raised bog areas in the Heumoor as remnants of post-glacial landscape development. The larger of the two lakes, the Große Sager Meer, is the deepest lake in the whole of Lower Saxony with a depth of over 25 meters. Today, both lakes are completely surrounded by a dense birch forest and cannot be walked on. From the Sager Meerweg trail, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the small heath landscape, which is particularly beautiful.
