The former limestone quarry at Barkhauser Berg, a nature reserve since 2004, offers unique habitats shaped by past mining. These special sites are home to rare and endangered animal and plant species. The area preserves diverse environments, including valuable calcareous semi-dry grasslands, rock debris communities, dry and temporarily wet sandy grasslands, and open sand areas. Unique temporary waters with reed beds and sedge swamps are also present. Additionally, near-natural deciduous forests thrive, rich in old and deadwood, supporting typical forest flora and fauna.
