This protected area is crucial for the preservation and optimization of structurally rich, extensively managed calcareous grasslands, unique rock habitats, and distinctive calcareous beech groves. These varied environments provide essential refuge for numerous rare and endangered animal and plant species. Beyond its ecological importance, the area is significant for its distinctive landscape, particularly the special character of the Kalberstert hill. It also safeguards archaeologically and scientifically interesting small structures, known as 'Pingen,' which hint at past activities. As part of the Natura 2000 network, specifically the 'Kalkkuppen bei Brilon' FFH-area and the 'Diemel- und Hoppecketal with adjacent forests' bird sanctuary, the NSG Scheffelberg / Kalberstert plays a key role in regional biodiversity protection.
