The Osternheuland - In den Erlen nature reserve is a significant wetland grassland complex within North Rhine-Westphalia's wet meadow network. It provides irreplaceable habitats for nationally endangered water, wading, and meadow birds, amphibians, dragonflies, grasshoppers, fish species, as well as unique plant species and communities. Protected species here include the Great Crested Newt, Kingfisher, and Marsh Harrier. The area also hosts valuable habitat types such as lowland hay meadows, wet tall herb communities, nutrient-poor standing waters (both base-poor and calcareous types), and flowing waters with underwater vegetation. Within this area, the Störmeder Bach and Geseker Bach converge to form the Brandenbaumer Bach. The rarity, distinct character, and exceptional beauty of this near-natural, largely extensively used lowland area within a historically evolved cultural landscape contribute to its special value.
