The NSG Obere Ahr, including its tributaries Muehlheimer Bach, Reetzer Bach, and Muehlenbachsystem, is a crucial nature reserve in the Eifel region. It preserves a rich mosaic of natural and semi-natural habitats. The area features pristine flowing waters with lush underwater vegetation, species-rich calcareous dry and semi-dry grasslands with rare orchids, and extensive juniper heaths. Along the river, you'll find vital alluvial forests and moist tall herb communities, while the slopes host various beech and oak-hornbeam forests, including unique gorge and slope mixed forests. This reserve is a sanctuary for numerous endangered species. It protects the Scarce Fritillary butterfly, fish like the Brook Lamprey and Bullhead, and several bat species including the Pond and Bechstein's bats. Birds such as the Kingfisher, Red Kite, Wryneck, and Grey-headed Woodpecker also thrive here. The area serves as a significant corridor for wildcats and is a retreat for many other red-listed animals and plants.
