Nature reserves constitute one of the most important conservation categories in Germany and Austria. The exact definitions vary, but together they combine the conservation of natural landscape, the protection of endangered species and the preservation for scientific interests.

Die Ausweisung als Naturschutzgebiet erfolgt zu folgendem Zweck • Erhalt eines Grünland-Brache-Gewässerkomplexes mit seiner für eine Grünlandbrache des Bergischen Landes charakteristischen Morphologie (bereits schwach reliefiertes Sohlental) und typischen Strukturelementen • Erhalt und Entwicklung der standörtlich differenzierten Grünlandvegetation, insbesondere des Naß- und Feuchtgrünlandes • Sicherung und Entwicklung der vorhandenen Biotopfunktion als lineares Vernetzungselemente im Biotopverbund Wipperquellenbereiche/Wipperbach und Wipperaue/Wupper
