The Bokshorn Nature Reserve in Porta Westfalica originated from a former dry excavation. Its raw soils, left to natural development, and partially re-cultivated slopes with deciduous trees, offer high structural diversity. This has led to the development of extensive ruderal communities, thickets, pioneer forest societies, and small water bodies, some bordered by reed beds, riparian zones, and woody plants. These valuable habitats serve as a refuge for rare plant and animal species. Specifically protected here are species of European interest, such as the Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus), the Natterjack Toad (Bufo calamita), and the Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis). NSG Bokshorn is designated as the 'Auf dem Bockshorn' FFH area, forming a key part of the European NATURA 2000 network. It also serves as a valuable node within North Rhine-Westphalia's statewide biotope network, contributing significantly to biodiversity conservation.
