The Lankower See nature reserve encompasses the southern part of Lankower See, its dense reed belts, and surrounding lowlands and forest areas. This diverse landscape provides crucial habitats for a variety of species. The lowlands are characterized by black alder, birch, and grey willow. The lake itself is teeming with life, documented to host 44 species of macrozoobenthos, including noble crayfish, pond snails, and a rich array of fish like eel, pike, tench, and perch. It serves as a significant resting ground for water birds such as greylag geese, tufted ducks, goosanders, cormorants, and grey herons. Furthermore, the area supports breeding populations of rare and characteristic birds, including the elusive bittern, water rail, kingfisher, great crested grebe, and reed warbler. This area plays a vital role in preserving the natural heritage of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
