The Felsenberg-Berntal nature reserve, situated at the eastern edge of the Pfälzerwald (Haardt) where it transitions into the Rhine plain, encompasses the distinct areas of Felsenberg and Berntal. Established fully in 2000, parts of it have been protected since 1954. The primary purpose of protection is to preserve this unique landscape with its striking rock formations, diverse forest ecosystems, and other characteristic habitats. It safeguards valuable flora and fauna, playing a crucial role as a component of the "Haardtrand" EU bird sanctuary. The reserve thus contributes significantly to maintaining regional biodiversity and ecological balance. While outside its boundaries, the nearby Herxheimer Karsthöhle is known for important archaeological and biological finds, highlighting the area's rich natural history. This area offers an insight into the natural heritage of Rheinland-Pfalz.
