The protected area includes the Brenta Dolomites mountain group and the entire Val di Tovel. It is one of the most majestic Dolomite mountain groups, with extensive forests, mountain pine thickets and alpine pastures at higher elevations, as well as pioneer vegetation on rocky walls and scree slopes. The flora is particularly rich in endemic species, and the fauna is abundant.

The vegetation consists of thermophilous deciduous forests, including manna ash, hop hornbeam and downy oak; montane deciduous forests, mainly beech; and coniferous forests, including Scots pine, silver fir and Norway spruce. The conservation status of the environment is excellent at higher elevations. The site is of significant importance due to the presence and reproduction of endangered animal species, important glacial relicts, and species that are exclusive to and/or characteristic of the Alps. Among the animal species found here are chamois, roe deer, marmot, mountain hare and fox. Arctic char inhabits the waters of Lake Tovel. The birdlife is particularly rich in grouse species, including capercaillie, black grouse, rock ptarmigan, hazel grouse and rock partridge. Golden eagles breed in the area, while bearded vultures have been regularly present since the 1990s. Birds of prey, both diurnal and nocturnal, are also of particular interest. The entire eastern ridge is crossed by migratory birds, while Grosté Pass is particularly important for autumn migration flows.
